HER MONEY FROM the house came in the post. She touched the cheque in disbelief, and foresaw the pitfalls. If the others knew they would expect a display of largesse and certainly a substantial rise in their standard of living. Word would get around and the boys and their satellite girls would descend like locusts. They must not know. The money was her security, compensation for the glass-cage years of marriage, for the two children she had borne and lost, for being at thirty-three a waitress despite early promise. Yet how could she coolly stash it away when the needs of her friends — and they were her friends, weren’t they? — were so pressing? Could she perpetuate privilege?

She would try. She banked the cheque in her lunchtime. The eight days needed for clearance would give her time to consider its fate. But she had never been good with secrets, she confided in Tug that same night.

‘Ten thousand! Why din’ you show me?

‘It was a cheque.’

‘I jus’ would’ve like to’ve seen the words. D’they have thousand dollar notes?’

‘Dunno. I suppose so.’

‘What colour are they d’you reckon? Don’t tell them others whatever you do.’

‘I wasn’t going to. I don’t want to start spending it. It can be a deposit on a house.’

‘Why don’ you get a car?’

‘I’d thought of that, but …’

‘I could get a job then. I could get around properly to look.’

‘You don’t have a licence.’

‘But I can drive. You know how hopeless it is getting to them job places on a bus.’

‘I’ll think about it.’

‘We could get away on our own in weekends.’
